Day trip to Big Sur, California

One of the most beautiful drive right next to the pacific ocean on Highway 1. (We did not stop at Carmel by the sea as we have done that as part of Monterey trip/17 mile drive day trip but if you have not, you should). Must stops while traveling from San Francisco to Big Sur after Monterey/Carmel by the sea town:

  • Garrapata state park bluff trail — 0.6 miles, moderate trail
  • Bixby creek bridge — Stop right before the bridge for spectacular view of the pacific, bridge as well as beach under the bridge
  • Point sur lighthouse
  • Big Sur river inn (restaurant) — there is a river behind the restaurant where you can take your food and eat
  • Pfeiffer beach
  • Nepenthe (restaurant) — Gorgeous pacific ocean view from top if clear day. Stop by here for lunch if skipped lunch at last stop (Big Sur River Inn)
  • Partington cove — 1.1 miles roundtrip to the cove
  • Mcway falls — We skipped entering the park and took a view of the falls from the road. If you enter through the park, it will be some walk and essentially will take you to the view point right below the road.
  • Limekiln state park — Has 2 short hikes: Limekiln creek falls trail (1.4 miles) and Hare creek and Limekiln trail (2.2 miles)
